Morrissey - our frank

Depression is a hallmark of the Morrissey ethos, to the point that when, during the encore, a succession of stage-crashers tried approaching the singer for a hug, Beatlemania-style, and one or two succeeded, you couldn’t be sure whether they wanted the love for themselves or to give him some assurance. But, of course, loneliness is usually hilariously barbed in Morrissey-land. One of his new songs came with a wish: “I wish you lonely, if only for one day, so that you might see routine for me since the day I was born.” Just when you were admiring the self-parody of that, he added — obviously quite seriously, given his animal rights concerns — “I wish you lonely, like the last tracked humpback whale chased by gunships from Bergen.”

After The Nosebleeds' split, Morrissey followed Duffy to join Slaughter & the Dogs , briefly replacing original singer Wayne Barrett. He recorded four songs with the band and they auditioned for a record deal in London. After the audition fell through, Slaughter & the Dogs became Studio Sweethearts, without Morrissey. [42] Morrissey came to be known as a minor figure within Manchester's punk community. [43] By 1981, Morrissey had become a close friend of Linder Sterling , the frontwoman of punk-jazz ensemble Ludus ; both her lyrics and style of singing influenced him. [44] Through Sterling, he came to know Howard Devoto and Richard Boon . [43] At the time, Morrissey's best male friend was James Maker; he would visit Maker in London or they would meet up in Manchester, where they visited the city's gay bars and gay clubs, in one case having to escape from a gang of gay bashers . ‘Low In High-School’ was recorded at La Fabrique Studios in France and in Rome at Ennio Morricone’s Forum Studios. The album was produced by Joe Chiccarelli – famed for working with the likes of Frank Zappa, The Strokes, Beck and The White Stripes.

Following his debut solo album Viva Hate back in 1988, he has since released a number of critically acclaimed follow-ups including Kill Uncle and Your Arsenal, and hugely successful comeback album You Are the Quarry after a five year hiatus in 2004.

Morrissey can appear fierce, aloof, very head girl. Perhaps her shoulders are feeling unusually light, now she has stepped down as CEO, because in the flesh today she is funny, humane, thoughtful.
